Mondays are usually associated with monotony, but not in Canton, Texas. This charming little town has managed to achieve the impossible- make Mondays exciting! It all started sometime around 1850s when the then circuit judge stopped at Canton to hold the jury proceedings.
Naturally, the entire town gathered to witness these proceedings- often bringing along their goods to trade with other inhabitants. The large gathering soon became a marketplace for people to sell their produce and livestock. And hence the grand flea market of Canton began and to this day is still thriving.
The tradition has been religiously followed to-date although with a few modern changes. For instance, for practical purposes the market isn’t always set up on Mondays but the name remains owing to its rich history and heritage. For a while, the event was initially scheduled on the first Monday of every month, but now it usually falls on a Thursday and goes on till Sunday. It is also interesting to note that the event is now celebrated the week before the first Monday.
The Largest Flea Market in the World
First Monday events are a monthly affair as once a month, in Canton Texas one can witness the biggest amalgamation of buyers, sellers, pickers found anywhere. People from all over the United States and even worldwide visit the flea market to get their hands on some valuable antiques or cheap furniture. On an average, there are about 100,000 visitors over the weekend. The market is stretched over 100 acres and accommodates roughly 6000 vendors from all walks of life with a wide variety of goods to sell.

There is never a dull moment at the First Monday market; the whole place is abuzz with activity and excitement.
1. Shopping galore
The shouts of vendors, the friendly conversations, the singing, the dancing, the sweet aromas of succulent cuisines wafting in the air- all contributes to a day of fun and frolic. There are buildings or pavilions all around the space for housing the more established and permanent vendors.
Others often occupy makeshift stalls and tents displaying their various products for all to see. Everything from furniture to electronics to clothes to handmade decorative items and even farm produce are here and at affordable prices.
2. Exploring The “Unreserved Section”
The unreserved section is the most popular part of the First Monday Canton Flea Market. For this is where you can find the best deals of restored furniture items, toys art supplies etc. available at a very nominal price. Note that all items are available on a first come first serve basis.

The Outdoor Expo is one of the most awaited events in the months of August-September. Hunters, sportsmen and fishermen can all gather around for an adventure of a lifetime. The flea market will be hosting a selection of world class hunting gear and other apparel. Spring or Fall are usually the best time to visit First Monday Market, but it is a worthy adventure no matter what time of year. Tourists who want to stay over the weekend can head over to the nearby accommodations or spend the night in a trailer van.
